Line Dry

Lest you think I'm truly nuts... I've been doing a lot more line drying of our clothes these past few months. It's been great. Takes me back to when I was a kid. The clothes smell great. :) I also cloth diaper part-time. What does that mean?

Well, before Lil M came home, I bought a bunch of these new-fangled cloth diapers that have buttons and have a different type of outside layer that keeps them from leaking. I've had really great success with them, actually, and I don't feel like I'm putting as much into landfills as we would be otherwise (obviously). Yes, I do a little bit more laundry, but not too much. Maybe it's 6 one have dozen the other... but... it makes me feel better.

This mommyhood thing has been quite an adventure so far... Lil M used the potty for the first time ever last night. It was cool. It took awhile, and I don't think she's got the idea quite yet. We're going to take it slow, like everything else we've done, but we're trying.

So, have you ever thought of "going green"? And what does that mean to you? I do recycle what I can. But the other stuff's been kind of newer to me and fun. Fun because I made the informed choice myself, it wasn't forced on me. I should take a pic of the clothes on the line, so Lil M can see how crazy her mommy was when she was little!! LOL

Peace.

  1. I don't use cloth diapers but I do use diapers from a company called Seventh Generation. The diapers are better for the environment and better for babies. Seventh Generation also has other products such as dish soap that environmentally friendly and don't contain the harsh chemicals. I love using them.

  2. wonder how they are better. unless it biodegrades faster, they're still putting stuff in the land fills. :(

i have heard good stuff about that brand, though, so, maybe i'll go check them out too!!!

  3. I've been trying to go green now for awhile. We didn't do the cloth diaper, but I did buy reusable pull ups that are from pottie patty. They did help her a bit with the potty training, but daycare didn't like them. I did use seventh generation as well. I like most of their stuff, but it can get expensive.

I've switched to cloth napkins (and hankies for me, if you can believe it)
I also hang most of my clothes, but K's go in the dryer, I'm afraid. Still it's only one load a week.

I don't buy bottled water, and haul ours around in either a Sigg bottle or a new camelback that's the good plastic (if there is such a thing..0

We just buy less and use it more. We recycle. We eat at home and don't waste food. We use less energy. I don't drink pop. oh, they are just little changes, but we are trying.

I'm trying to impress upon k that when washing her hands that an awful lot of water goes down the drain while she dawdles... we'll see if that sinks in.

  4. Line drying is fabulous (when the sun shines!). I challenged myself to go without the dryer all winter and found that it wasn't so hard.

I used disposable nappies (diapers) for my children but if I had my time again I would consider using cloth - I'm told that children potty train faster with cloth.

  5. Actually, when I was a kid, line drying was pretty normal! Funny how things come back around again!

My little sister is a whole LOT greener than I have ever been...even mows her lawn with one of those roller blade push things (no electricity or gasoline used...just you pushing it to make the blades spin and chew the grass up). She's pretty dedicated.

(Congratulations on the great start on potty training!!! It is so GOOD to graduate away from diaper changing!!!!)
